2nd Asian Directors Golf Tournament

Willingdon Sports Club, Mumbai

2nd Asian Director Golf Tournament was played at Willington club, Mumbai on 22nd Nov 08. This being the second edition, there were quite a few participants who played second time, some were first timers.  Tournament was jointly organized by Asian Centre for Corporate Governance & Sustainability (ACCGS) & Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC).

Participants of Several nationalities like Singaporeans, Koreans, Americans, South Africans and Indians played the tournament. Tournament was great fun, created good bonhomie and provided great networking opportunity for participants.

Some of the leading Chairmen, MDs & CEOs & Directors of Corporate India, who treaded the greens & fairways, were ;

The awards were distributed by Mr G.N.Bajpai – Former Chairman, SEBI, who himself is a keen Golfer.

Scoring for the tournament was on the Stableford Format.  Accordingly, following points were awarded on gross score per hole basis. Eagle (2 under par) + 4 points, Birdie (1 under par) + 3 points,           Par + 2 points, Bogey (1 over par) + 1 point,     Double Bogey (2 over par) or over nil points. Gross Stableford points scored by a player, were added to the adjusted handicap of the player to arrive at final score of a player.  Adjusted player’s handicap was 2/3rd of the declared handicap in order to make up for shorter 15 hole round played.  There was a case of tie on points, the winners was picked on the basis of gross points scored on last 8 holes, then last 4 holes.  Maximum 18 hole handicap permitted for the Tournament was 28, which on 2/3rd adjustment came to 19.

Asian Centre for Corporate Governance has been organizing an international Conference every year for last several years. The idea of connecting a Golf Tournament and to mix fun with the Conference has been brewing for few years, it was in the November 2007, when two leaders of Asian Governance space, Mr John Lim – President, Singapore Institute of Director & Mr M.K.Chouhan, Vice Chairman, Global Advisory Board, Asian Centre for Corporate Governance & Sustainability got together in Singapore, that this idea came to fruition.

1st Asian Directors Golf Tournament was organized on the very next day of 8th International Conference on Corporate Governance & Sustainability, which was held on 23rd January 2008 at Hotel Taj Mahal, Mumbai, with the support of Major Institutes of Directors from Asian Countries like Singapore, Hongkong, Malaysia, Indonesia & Thailand.

Bombay Presidency Golf Club (BPGC) Chembur, Mumbai, provided the ideal setting for the 1st Asian Directors Golf Tournament on 24th January, 2008. The high-powered Chairmen, MDs, CEOs, Directors, CXOs & CFOs from Indian corporate world rubbed shoulders with Directors of Several nationalities like Japanese, Singaporean, American, European & South African. Directors gathered at BPGC at 8.30 am to enjoy ‘off the course’ networking & breakfast before tee off. At 9.45 am, Mahendra Chouhan hit the first tee off with his four ball comprising of Andrew, Pramod & Shiv. Participation was by invitation to maintain a certain quality of participation. Young Golfers like Shashank, Alok, Rajiv, Arpit  & Royota Nakagawa mingled with the senior Golfers like Capt. Batra & Rear Admiral Thakural to participate in the tournament. Indian Corporate world was well represented by A.K. Bansal of BPCL, S.K.Mitra, Pramod Bhambani of Siemens, Bala Belluri of Delloitte, Suresh Balasubramanian of Edelweiss Finance, Andrew Levermore & John Wilcox of HyperCity Retail (India) Limited and many more.

To ensure that ‘Non Golfers’ did not miss the ‘FUN’ a special feature was added, Practice area was reserved for them to try their hand at Golf with practice of Putting & Chipping.

Gordon Mock (22 points) was the proud winner of 1st Asian Directors Golf Tournament and took home the Gorgeous Golden Rolling trophy along with a Winner’s Crystal Trophy, which will remain his proud possession and adorn his shelf.  Alok Agarwal (20 points) as runner up acquired second beautiful trophy in crystal.

There was the yet another category of prizes with goody bags of golf balls and cap. The ‘3rd Hole: Straight Drive’ goody bag went to John Wilcox, the ‘8th Hole : Closest to Pin’ went to Ryoto Nakagava who placed his ball 2 feet from the pin and the ‘9th Hole : Longest Drive’ goody bag went to Andrew Levermore at 290 yards. Awards were presented by Mahendra Chouhan, Vice Chairman, Global Advisory Board, Asian Centre for Corporate Governance & Sustainability, Mr S.K.Mitra & Capt. Batra.
